During Panama City's Our Ocean Conference 2023, President Laurentino Cortizo and Minister of Environment Milciades Concepción joined forces by signing an Executive Decree to expand the marine protected area of Banco Volcán. This expansion significantly bolsters Panama's conservation efforts.  With this decree, Panama now protects over half of its oceans, solidifying its position as a leader in regional conservation. 

This vast protected area not only ensures the preservation of vital marine biodiversity but also acts as a potent nature-based solution for mitigating climate change.
